Trail Peak and Cottonwood Pass – 15 miles in the wilderness

I hiked 15 miles to Trail Peak and along the Cottonwood Pass Loop from the Cottonwood Pack Station (Horseshoe Meadows).  I had been wanting to explore more of this wilderness for sometime. All year long I think about summer in the sierra, and visiting places like this. The Golden Trout Wilderness is located in the southern sierra, and is a pristine wilderness, filled with rocky granite peaks, such as Mount Langley, Cirque Peak, and my destination for the day, Trail Peak. The way to Trail Peak, included a climb up Trail Pass, and hiking on the PCT. I passed several PCT hikers, and JMT hikers here. The marked trail to this peak on Alltrails maps is not a trail at all. After leaving the PCT, making the approach to trail peak, the choice is yours since it is entirely off trail to the peak.  This hike was very steep and  included class 2 scrambling, along with lots of boulder hopping, where you get to choose your own adventure.

Mill Peak and Exploration Trail

There are a few peaks in the area around Lake Arrowhead, and one of these, Mill Peak, sits at 6657 feet, towering over San Bernardino below. It is located between the small mountain enclaves of Arrowbear Lake and Running Springs. After driving up SR-330, past fire charred hillsides, I eventually made a turn onto Hilltop Blvd. I would park at the trailhead for both Mill Peak and Exploration Trail, located just past the Deer Lick Fire Station, along Keller Peak Rd. I started hiking rather late, around 11 am.

Nature and wilderness are a pristine, unpolluted place to find solitude. I have a thing about hiking in and exploring ecological reserves, with their intact natural beauty, native flora and fauna. You can learn the story of a place not just by what is placed there, but from what was there all along, before any development ever took place. Several of these wild places are found throughout socal, and today I was going to explore a new one, exploring 6 miles throughout the Blue Sky Ecological Reserve.

Timber Mountain via Chapman Trail

Today my plan was to take Icehouse Canyon to Chapman Trail, before hiking on to Icehouse Saddle. I had been planning to hike to Timber Mountain, one of the Three’s T’s, the last of the three I had not summited after Thunder Mountain and Telegraph Peak.
