From the Quail Hill parking area in Irvine I set out to enjoy the Bommer Canyon Open Access Day. Registration was not required, and it was free to park at the trailhead here, unlike some of the other nearby trailheads. I went on a 10 mile Mountain Bike Ride and Hike in Black Star Canyon at the Mariposa Reserve. I parked at the trailhead, and road on up the wide flat road, to see how far I would climb into the hills. The wide, flat, sometimes rutted road leading to Black Star Canyon Falls, draws a crowd, especially on weekends. Whether it’s waterfalls, wildflowers, history, or mystery, Black Star Canyon continues to be a magnet to visitors.

I set out through Eaton Canyon in Altadena, CA on a sunny spring day in February.I would be hiking on to the waterfall, and there would be many creek crossings. Some of the trail was damaged during recent rains from the atmospheric river events California was experiencing.
The hike to San Juan Hill from the Casino Ridge Staging area is a shorter, and steeper way to the peak. The trailhead is located on the southern side of Chico Hills near Water Canyon. It's a beautiful trail to explore, and the parking is free.
