Follow me for a scenic 3 mile hike around Dana Point Harbor in Orange County, CA past the boats and ships docked by Baby Beach, and the Ocean Institute. It's an east hike, that just about anyone might enjoy, if they love boats, and nautical stuff, as much as I do.
So here we were, at the South Fork Trailhead, just three days before we would leave for the High Sierra Trail, doing a shakedown hike. We were starting late, and that was my fault. But I wanted to go ahead with the shakedown hike anyway, since we were running out of days to do this, before the Sierras. I wanted to have one day to recover before we headed up there. We arrived just after 4pm, and had just a few hours of sunlight left. The parking lot was completely empty of cars, which was not what I was expecting.
Ladder and Painted Canyons are one of the most interesting desert hikes through the backcountry in the Mecca Wilderness in the Coachella Valley. Light paints the desert canyon walls along this hike in many shades of red, purple, green, and gold, depending on the time of day. The tall sheer walls of painted canyon will make you feel so small, in comparison.
The town of Lake Elsinore became developed and took off in1888. It was a stop on the famous Butterfield Stage route. The healing waters of the mineral springs here, drew in visitors from far and wide. Coal and clay mining, gold, ranching, fruit, and nut growing, helped drive growth. The Salton Sea is a peculiar place. Much of it has been desolate since it fell out of favor, since its hey day. It was once a vacation destination for the rich and famous, and would go on to become an ecological disaster, a eutrophic lake, where fish can't survive.
