The Talbert Nature Preserve has over 3 miles of trails, and sits on the outskirts of Costa Mesa, beginning in Fairview Park, and continuing alongside the Santa Ana River Trail. I love open space, and getting outside into nature to quiet places where the birds sing to hike a few miles every day. Sometimes I explore new trails I have never been, such as this one.

Backpacking PCT Section A – Day 1
I have thought and wondered about hiking the PCT a lot of the years. Living in Southern California, not far from the trail, I had hiked on short sections of it, out and back. I had not yet backpacked or thru hiked an entire section before. Section A starts in Campo, CA and is 107.1 miles long, ending in Warner Springs, CA. The prospect of hiking 100 miles was exciting to me. I knew the time to do it was in spring, after the nights warmed above freezing, and preferably after the winter time rains ended.
Cattle Crest and Rabbit Run from Quail Hill
From the Quail Hill parking area in Irvine I set out to enjoy the Bommer Canyon Open Access Day. Registration was not required, and it was free to park at the trailhead here, unlike some of the other nearby trailheads. Hope this guide is helpful for planning your hikes on Bommer Canyon Open Access Day.
Hiking the Ladera Ridge
12 Mile Run in Ladera Hills – Arroyo Trabuco Trail
I set out on the Arroyo Trabuco Trail, which is a 16 mile long trail along Aliso Creek in Ladera Ranch, CA. The trail terminates at O'neil Park, in Trabuco Canyon, within the foothills of the Santa Ana Mountains. There are actually two trails, one along each side of the creek. Depending on how high the water level is, there are a few possible spots to cross it, and reach the other side of the trail. The alternative is to cross via the bridge at Crown Valley Parkway, or Oso Parkway.
