The Lakes Trail was filled with beautiful pristine wilderness scenery all along the way. Late season snow in July made this trip even more interesting. On this trip I was on a mission to explore all the best trails of the park. Snow seemed to be lingering on the high peaks above 9000 feet, and the Lakes Trail was begging to be explored.
I visited Sequoia Park in July of 2023, and travelled on several scenic trails, staying at Lodgepole Campground. The trailhead to Tokopah Falls begins at Lodgepole Campground in Sequoia National Park, just after crossing over the Kaweah River Bridge towards the rear of the campground.
The first step in thru-hiking the High Sierra Trail (HST) is get up the nerve to hike 80+ miles in the wilderness, into the middle of nowhere and over one of the tallest peaks in the US, which is Mount Whitney, elevation 14,501 feet. Follow our journey from Orange County to the Sierras, to hike the High Sierra Trail. This guide details how we got there via the Greyhound, along with Day 1 of our trek on the High Sierra Trail. The trail begins in Sequoia Park and travels across the Sierras to Mount Whitney, at and elevation of 14,501 feet.
