November Hiking Recap

For everything there is a season, especially hiking. When I think about hiking in November, several things come to mind. This is a time of year when the seasons change hands, when the temperatures finally start to cool and the first rain of the season may occur. Nights may dip into the low 50’s and morning dew covers the grass in the morning. I love hiking during this time of the year, watching the leaves begin to turn golden. I managed to get in 22 hikes in November, and hike to 4 peaks. So as far as hiking goes, November delivered!

Annie’s Canyon and the San Elijo Lagoon

I have known of Annie's Canyon a few years, yet strayed away from visiting it, placing my efforts more on long strenuous climbs, challenging myself. I did not think this would be challenging, and I knew it was a very crowded popular spot, so I kept putting off visiting here. The trail through the San Elijo Ecological Reserve leading toward Annie’s Canyon, has several different options to accessing the canyon. I ended up choosing the trailhead located at the end of North Rios Avenue, also referred to on maps as the Gemma Parks Interpretive Trail. The San Elijo Lagoon is an estuary, surrounded by a series of winding trails throughout the marsh.

September Hikes – Sandy Beaches and Wooded Canyons

Wood Canyon and Wood Creek Loop: I love this canyon, and its woodsy vibe. I wound my way along Wood Creek Trail and onto Coyote Run. Along the way I had a run in with a large Southern Pacific Rattlesnake, which coiled as I passed it, causing me to jump out of the way. It was maybe 4 feet from the trail, under a tree branch. It had a humongous girth, for a juvenile, evidenced by the rattles in their tails.

Exploring “Trails” and Tidepools in Spring

Follow me on my springtime hike through the San Onofre State Beach Bluffs, a place mainly known for its surfing, not hiking. This place is called “Trails,” by surfers, due to a large number of steep trails, leading down to the beach from the parking area. It is rarely crowded here, and a place to feel like you're getting away from it all.
