The Murals of Exeter

What To Expect

The small town of Exeter, CA is located in the Central Valley, just east of the Sierras, and Sequoia Park. What was simply going to be a dinner stop, to grab a bite to eat, on the way to Sequoia Park, turned into an art walk.

The Murals

Exeter is known for it’s murals among other things. This is a sleepy feeling town. In the middle of July, just a handful people were walking through town. Given it was close to 95 degrees out, for such a clean, attractive town, with colorful murals in every direction, you would think there might be more tourists here.

After enjoying a delicious Mexican meal at Alejandra’s Mexican Food, a local restaurant, we decided to drive past these murals. Once we noticed what a neat town it was, we decided a walking tour was in order, despite the heat.

This mural of the Sierras, was one of my favorites, and was located in the courtyard of The Brewery.

The murals in part depicted the labels, as one would find on vintage fruit crates. Orchards, and farming are after all, an important part of life in the Central Valley, so it made sense the people of Exeter were celebrating their history through art.

There are railroad tracks running through Exeter, but the railroad no longer makes a stop here. The former train station, had been converted to offices.

This mural depicted the simple life, of an Exeter of times gone by.

This one was interesting since it depicted a team of horses, as you might expect of the pioneers, yet it is pulling a harvester instead. This was before gas powered engines, when horsepower was from horses, not a selling point for fast cars.

The town has 31 murals total, so plan extra time if you plan to see them all.
