Within Joshua Tree National Park, in the California desert, there are thousands of these strange trees, for which the park received its namesake.

There is a campground here called Jumbo Rocks, which is popular for camping, amongst the enormous boulders.

Joshua Tree is popular with climbers who go bouldering, and there are 12,000 named climbs in the park.

Some rocks are small, some large, and there is even a climb called “the burrito,” on a rock resembling the popular dinner item.

Though it’s high desert, there are still plenty of plants, trees, cactus, and shrubs, that thrive in the harsh environment, such as juniper.

The campground can support small trailers and RV’s but you need to choose your spot wisely, as some spots are quite a tight squeeze to get into.

The Yucca is an important plant, you will see throughout the park. The tribes used it for both food, basketry, and clothing.

There are several hikes around the campground you can reach, without leaving your site. Most are not very well marked. I downloaded alltrails maps, so I was able to navigate around. There is no cell service to speak of in Joshua Tree. Not even your google map will work, so plan accordingly..

You can barely make it out, but this is part of the Jumbo Rocks loop trail.

I camped out at Jumbo Rocks with my daughter, and my dog. It was her first time visiting this place. She agreed to go on one hike with me, to Arch Rock.
If your come with kids, be sure to check out Skull Rock too.
I only stayed one night, but this campground really delivers on the scenery. It was back to civilization, and cell service, which my teenager appreciated. Never come here without researching the wifi service if you have a teenager, or you may never hear the end of it.
I was glad to snag just the one night in April. This is the peak time to visit Joshua Tree, since the weather is about perfect, not too hot, and not too cold.
I would also hike the Split Rock Loop and Arch Rock Loop on this visit.
I hope you enjoyed reading this, and it is helpful in knowing what to expect, should you decide to visit here.
