A Scenic Drive on Cottonwood Springs Road

This drive is the original inspiration for the ride, Radiator Springs Racers in Disneyland. If you love scenic byways, then you’re going to enjoy this drive. If you’re heading to Joshua Tree National Park, you can access the less crowded South Entrance from this road. You simply head up Box Canyon Road from Mecca, CA through a maze of badlands.

There are several hikes, and slot canyons along the road, marked brown sign posts. There are no actual parking areas, and you must park on the sand.

Not much grows along this stretch of road, except Cottonwoods, the roads namesake.

These are badlands, so they are relatively barren and stark. They appear to twist and move in wave like patterns.

Cottonwoods can reach water sources deep underground. This is due to their long foot systems, reaching up to 100 feet down.

Eventually the badlands end, and you will spot Joshua Tree National Park in the distance, after crossing the 10 freeway.

I hope you enjoyed reading this, and it is helpful in knowing what to expect, should you decide to visit here.
