A Windy Day and a Big Swell in Dana Point: Killer Dana Rises Again

The swell was building, as massive waves crashed across Dana Point breakwater, a long jetty protecting the harbor.

I was standing right by the Ocean Institute with the headlands towering above.

I always loved this spot, for checking the waves.

They will crash over the exposed reef and rock offshore, and bounce off the breakwater.

On a big swell, the waves can crash over the breakwater, making waves in the harbor. I have even seen paddleboarders surfing these waves.

I imagine Killer Dana, was all the epic point break people make it out to have been.

There is a good bit of swell in the water today.

As I was admiring the waves, a the powerful windstorm was blasting sand in my face at full force.

I turn my head to the side, to protect my eyes. The winds were whipping at a consistent 25-30 mph, with 40-50 mph gusts. It was not a day for surfing, at least not for me.

Richard Henry Dana, would have docked his ship just off this same headland here, long ago.

After checking the waves, I wanted to get a different view, so I decided to drive to the top of the headlands.

The views up here were also amazing!

There are several trails up here, and this deck is a great viewing area.

It looked like Killer Dana, was seeking to rise again, from atop the cliff.

I decided to check the waves again, but this time at Doheny.

I set off through the beach as the sand blasted my face. I decided to turn my back to the wind, to avoid being blinded. I felt completely at the mercy of the weather.

I never thought my hoodie, and sunglasses, would serve as sand protection, when I put the on today.

I trudged across the beach, with the wind at my back, towards the south jetty, where San Juan Creek lets out. There were lots of shorebirds everywhere, staying grounded. I am sure this wind was too much for them.

I don’t mind the wind, I can enjoy it. Today it was rather intense though.

The seascapes were so dynamic today. I imagined myself a plein air painter today. There were so many opportunities to capture the waves in their most dynamic moment.

It’s always a good day to get outside, walk at the beach, and if your a surfer like me, do a wave check.

I hope you enjoyed reading this, and it is helpful in knowing what to expect, should you decide to visit here.
