A Short Scenic Hike in Orange County: Dana Point Headlands Trail

So I set off of this beautiful trail, on a sunny and partly cloudy day, with the flowers all in bloom. There really is not a more perfect time to take this hike, than in spring, and early summer, when the everything is green. I like to hike when it’s cooler weather, and breezy. This was just such a day.

The lower trail is more hard packed, and easier to walk on that the upper trail

So starting off is a very short trail, as you drive up the road towards the trailhead at the top, you will see another shorter trail on the left side, and another set of stairs on the right. The one on the left is perfect for getting amazing shots of Dana Point harbor, if your like me, and love to take photos.

Dana Point Interpretive Center

At the very top of the hill is the Dana Point Interpretive Center, which in past has hosted events, and ranger led talks for kids.

Finding the Trailhead

So finding the trailhead is easy, since you just keep walking to the dead end, from the nature center down the path, to the gate. The trail is .9 miles roundtrip, and rated as easy.

It is sandy, and not paved. If you or the people you are with struggle to walk in sand, this may not be an easy one.

The views from this headland, are simply spectacular. It’s one of the most scenic coastal hikes in Orange County.

This Nature Center has a parking area, and you can also park on the hill on the way up, if you want a midpoint between both scenic trails.

This is a perfectly preserved coastal bluff, just as it would have looked in the times of Richard Henry Dana.

This area has a varied topography, from the steep beachside cliffs of Laguna Beach, to Laguna Canyon, and the canyons beside Saddleback Mountain.

Note: Check if the trail is open before you go, since it is behind a locked gate.
